The Yarraman Creek Landcare Group was formed in 1990 to continue to develop an awareness of the issues affecting the catchment area and to encourage sustainable land management practices. The Landcare group was formed out of the Yarraman Creek Catchment Committee which was formed in the mid-1970s to implement the Yarraman Creek Soil Conservation Project, in conjunction with the then Soil Conservation Service.
The Landcare group has established the following objectives;
- to investigate and address the salinity problem within the catchment
- to increase awareness, development and adoption of rehabilitation and reafforestation practices in the community
- to foster a spirit of cooperation within the group and to maintain the benefit of sustainable agriculture within the area defined
- the implementation of long term sustainable management strategies for native vegetation and water resources in the Yarraman catchment and ensure an environmentally stable landscape
- publicise activities of the group
- maintain the group's participation and liaison with relevant government departments
As a means of achieving these objectives the Landcare group requested the support from the DLWC to undertake a catchment plan, including a river plan and floodplain management study. The catchment planning process involves a number of different stages. As a base requirement it was agreed by the group that all available information on the natural resources of the catchment should be collated. The awareness of these natural resources gives everyone in the catchment the ability to gain a full understanding of the processes causing land degradation. This will enable the group to make informed decisions about the land management recommendations for the catchment area.
This document has been developed from the available baseline data on the natural resources of the Yarraman Creek Catchment.
