Floodplain Risk Management Plan

Draft Upper Coxs Creek - Flood Management Plan for the Upper Coxs Creek Floodplain Bundella to Mullaley

In response to the Liverpool Plains FIoodplain Management Advisory Committee identifying the Upper Coxs Creek floodplain as a high priority area requiring management guidelines, the DLWC has prepared a flood management plan which makes recommendations to coordinate agricultural development, minimise flood damage and restore surface water flow paths to acceptable patterns.

Such studies provide landholders with a detailed overview of flood flow and local drainage behaviour of the floodplain and how flooding and drainage are affected by structures, earthworks and other infrastructure development. This information is also required for the DLWC to determine applications for the erection or retention of structures on the floodplain under Part 8 of the Water Act.

General recommendations are also made in relation to catchment land use and agricultural "Best Management Practices" to reduce the erosion hazard on the floodplain and improve water quality.

It should be stressed that the suggested plan is only a "guideline" for floodplain development. Suggested modification works affecting existing and proposed development may be varied provided it can be shown that alternative options are hydraulically and environmentally acceptable to the community and fit the criteria to allow licenses to be granted under the Water Act.
