Upper Bellinger River - Preliminary Flood Assessment Exhibition Report

The study area covers the Bellinger River from approximately Dardanelles Creek to Bellingen and Never Never River from Capararos Bridge above Gleniffer to its confluence with the Bellinger River. The study approach involves:

  • collection of available data;
  • analysis of available data;
  • establishment of computer based hydrological and riverine hydraulic model;
  • estimation of flood levels from the computer models.

Model calibration and verification has not been rigorously undertaken because of budget constraints, the total length of river investigated, the limited number of residents who will benefit from the investigation and the multiple occupancies which creates groups of population that are quite separated over the length of Bellinger River above Thora. Accordingly, the study has been titled "Preliminary Flood Assessment".

The current study objective is to undertake a flood assessment of the Upper Bellinger River (above Bellingen) and the Never Never River. Given the lack of significant volumes of data regarding flood levels derived and derived flood flows, the approach taken has been to rely on technical experience and numerical flood models rather than to attempt a complete model calibration and verification process.
