Spring Creek Catchment Flood Study

The Spring Creek catchment is situated within Kiama Local Government Area (LGA), a coastal community that is located approximately 120 km south of Sydney, NSW. The nearest urban townships include Minnamurra, Gerringong, Gerroa and Jamberoo. The town of Kiama itself is accessible primarily from Princes Highway, which runs in a north-south direction, and from Jamberoo Road to the west.

Council has the responsibility to undertake a Flood Study (the Study) in accordance with the Floodplain Development Manual. The primary objective of this study was to define:

  • The flood behaviour under historical conditions;
  • Design flood behaviour under existing conditions; and
  • Design flood behaviour under future climate conditions.

This study focused on determining the flood levels, depths, flows, hydraulic categories, and provisional hazard categories for a full range of design events. Hydrologic and hydraulic modelling was undertaken to satisfy the study objectives. The models and results produced in this flood study will form the basis for a future floodplain risk management study and plan.
