Flooding of the Shoalhaven River 29th April-1st May 1988

Heavy rainfall in the upper catchment of the Shoalhaven River during the period 29 April to 1 May 1988 resulted in a major flood occurring in the lower reaches of the river. Observations of the staff gauge at Nowra Bridge showed the river height peaked at a level. of RL 4.65m AHD late on Saturday 30 April 1988. From the stage height frequency curve at Nowra Bridge the flood had a slightly less than 1:10 yr ARI. In line with the Department's responsibility to collect flood data, the Wollongong Regional Office proceeded to carry out a stream gauging operation to determine flood velocities on the downstream side of the Old Nowra Bridge.
