Shoalhaven Milling Company - Flood Study For Proposed Mill Extensions

This flood study has been undertaken for the Shoalhaven Milling Company of Nowra, to investigate flooding at the site of proposed extension to their existing mill. The mill is located on the northern banks of the Shoalhaven River at Bomaderry, approximately 1.5 km downstream of the Nowra bridge with the subject site for the mill extension immediately adjacent.

Both the existing mill and the site for the proposed extensions are susceptible to flooding from the Shoalhaven River. In the last major floor of March 1978, the mill was inundated with extensive damage to machinery and equipment. It is understood however, that the costs involved in relocation of the mill are exorbitantly high so that the risks of inundation due to flooding and the resulting costs (both in lost production and damage to equipment) are accepted by the Milling Company.

This report addresses only hydraulic engineering aspects of flooding at the subject site. Council zoning or State Government planning policies are not dealt with here-in. No work has been done on the economic analysis of flood damage assessment.
