Review and Assessment of Hydrologic/Hydraulic Flood Study Models

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has engaged the NSW Department of Commerce's Manly Hydraulics Laboratory (MHL) to carry out a review of the features and applications of hydraulic and hydrologic computer modelling software. The review is to focus on the software packages that are most commonly used in flood studies and floodplain management studies in NSW.

The need for a review of this type stems from the advancements in hydraulic and hydrologic computer modelling software packages in recent years. Another factor is the importance of keeping local councils in NSW up to date with these developments to assist with decision-making in undertaking flood studies and floodplain management studies.

This report has been split into two different volumes:

  • Volume I covers hydrologic models, and
  • Volume II covers hydraulic models.

This report is aimed at those involved in the floodplain management area and seeks to cater for all levels of technical expertise. Thus the review provides information to readers varying from those new to floodplain management issues to those with experience in the area.

This report does not seek to be a comprehensive technical manual of floodplain management and modelling. However it does seek to provide the basic level of understanding required of those dealing with floodplain management issues.
