Development of a Floodplain Policy in New South Wales, Australia

This paper describes from an historical perspective, the commencement of flood mitigation, the transition into floodplain management and the evolution of floodplain management policy. In New South Wales, the government responsibility for floodplain management and for financial and technical assistance, is exercised by the Public Works Department for the tidal reaches of coastal rivers and the Department of Water Resources for the remainder of the river system.
