The Hydrogeology of the Barmah Forest

The Barmah Forest is a large area of red gum forest located on the flood plain of the River Murray between Tocumwal and Echuca. Concern has been expressed by the River Murray Water and Forest Management Victorian State Working Group that changes in river flows caused by river regulation and irrigation practices are threatening the long term viability of the red gum forest ecosystem. To maintain the environment and avoid deterioration in tree health, the forest should be flooded during winter-spring regularly, as was the natural situation prior to river control. Now the river is more likely to flood during summer-autumn because of irrigation requirements, and the trees are suffering as a result.

Hydrogeological investigations commenced in the forest in 1984. This study was initiated by the Melbourne University School of Forestry and was continued by the Rural Water Commission at the request of the State Working Group. The aims of the study were as follows:

  1. To determine the relationship between tree health and water table depth.
  2. To investigate and interpret the hydrogeology of the area.
  3. To assess whether the threat of rising water tables and salinity exists in the forest.
  4. To determine the viability of groundwater recharge as a means of tree watering.

This report will present the results of the hydrogeological investigation of the forest.
