Wetlands of the River Murray

"The River Murray flows 2530 kilometres from its source in the Eastern Highlands to its mouth in Encounter Bay, south-east of Adelaide. Over that part of its course below the Hume Dam — 2225 kilometres or 88% of its total length — the river is regulated for water supply and navigation with consequent changes to the hydrology and ecology of the associated wetlands.

The area covered by this study consists of two parts:

  • The floodplain of the River Murray from the Hume Dam to Wellington, where the river enters Lake Alexandrina, the floodplalns of the Edward River and other anabranches of the Murray, and groups of wetlands outside the floodplains but which receive water from the Murray system via natural and artificial channels;
  • Lakes Alexandrina and Albert (the lower lakes), the Coorong, and wetlands surrounding these large bodies of water or occurring on islands within them.

The study area occupies over 10,000 square kilometres of which nearly 9000 square kilometres are occupied by the floodplains of the River Murray and its anabranches. The main aims of the River Murray wetland survey were to produce an inventory of the wetlands, involving mapping and classification, to compile the published and unpublished literature on these areas, and to identify wetlands with potential for hydrological management. The results of the inventory and assessment of management potential are briefly summarised below. The wetland maps and bibliography are contained in the main report. "
