Guidelines for Floodplain Development Murray River - Murray-Wakool Rivers - Moama-Moulamein Railway to Trunk Road 94

This report has been prepared for issue to landholders and interested persons on the Wakool and Murray River flood plains in the vicinity of Barham and Swan Hill.

It outlines a system of floodways which should remain unobstructed by any future development, and identifies existing earthworks which should be amended so that these floodways can function efficiently. It also suggests areas which could be protected from flooding by levees, should the landholders concerned so desire.

Any landholder contemplating further development, or the construction of other earthworks such as flood protection levees or elevated access roads, is urged to consult the Commission in the first instance, to ensure that the proposed earthworks will not increase flood hazards.

The landholder's attention is specifically drawn to the requirements of Part VIII of the Water Act which is discussed in detail in Section 3 of the report. Consideration should also be given to the environmental safeguards detailed in Section 5.
