Floodplain Risk Management Study

Murray River Flood Plain Management Study

"The principal objectives of the Murray River flood plain management study were to identify flooding problems within the 12700 km2 study area from Lake Hume to the South Australian border and to recommend a programme of detailed studies of these problems on a priority basis.

The report on the study is presented in a three volume format:

  • Executive Summary
  • Detailed Report
  • Flood Plain Atlas

plus a public information pamphlet containing the main findings of the study.

The study has involved consideration of existing flood plain management legislation in Victoria and New South Wales, and collation and analysis of a large quantity of flood level and flow data. The extents of past major floods have been mapped at 1:100 000 scale and the nature and extent of existing and proposed works in the flood plain have been catalogued.

The nature of the flooding problems being experienced in the study area are described firstly in general terms for the whole study area, then for two urban/rural reaches surrounding Cobram-Tocumwal and Swan Hill respectively and finally for the numerous individual towns along the river.

A brief review of environmental issues and the effects of flooding on communications has been carried out and a detailed analysis of the Interstate Levees Agreement performed.

The study recommends a seven year programme of detailed flooding investigations subdivided into high, medium and low priority areas. The total cost of the programme is $1030000, about half of which is devoted to the two high priority studies in the vicinity of Cobram-Tocumwal (Dick's Levee to Picnic Point) and Swan Hill (Murrabit to Speewa Island)."
