Mungindi is located on the Barwon River, on the New South Wales - Queensland border. That part of the township south of the river lies in the Moree Plains Shire Council Local Government Area (LGA) in New South Wales. The area of town north of the river lies in the Balonne Shire Council LGA in Queensland. The town is protected from flooding by a levee system that surrounds the township both north and south of the river. During times of flood the township of Mungindi provides an essential support system for the surrounding rural community. The integrity and the level of protection provided by the Mungindi levee system is vital to the township and its rural community.
The current flood analysis involves a detailed assessment of the data and methodology used in the previous flood assessments. Where appropriate information and methodologies have been revised to suit the specific requirements of the present study. Key objectives addressed by this flood analysis, as is outlined in the following sections of this report, include:
- A detailed review of previous studies and available information.
- Revisions to the existing flood assessment, including data and methodology for the purposes of the current flood analysis.
- Assessment of the existing levee system for a range of design flood events and floodplain development scenarios.
- Sensitivity analyses to identify the variability in model results with various modelling inputs. This included an assessment of the potential impacts of flood behaviour at Mungindi due to the surrounding rural levees.
- Development of a proposed flood levee arrangement to meet the nominated level of flood protection.
- Assessment of the performance and potential flood impacts of the proposed levee arrangement.
