Maitland - Floodplain Modelling for the State Emergency Service (Draft)

The State Emergency Service (SES) is currently preparing a Flood Action Plan for the Maitland area. The information they are using to prepare the Plan is the Public Works Floodplain Atlas which was produced in the early 1980's based on information available at that time. In order to determine suitable evacuation strategies, the SES should be using more detailed information on potential flood behaviour around Maitland, such as can be obtained from the floodplain hydraulic model set up for the current Floodplain Management Study of the Maitland area.

Webb McKeown have been invited by the Public Works (Technical Brief dated 17.3.93) to provide a proposal to undertake the required work using the hydraulic model. The objective of the study is to generate flood stage and time history data at selected locations for a representative range of possible mainstream flooding conditions which may occur at and around Maitland.

Webb McKeown are currently undertaking the Maitland Floodplain Management Study for Maitland City Council. The Unix Mike 11 hydrodynamic model which was developed during the Lower Hunter Flood Study has been upgraded for use in the present Floodplain Management Study, and is well suited to meeting the requirements of the SES.
