Floodplain Risk Management Study

Macquarie River Floodplain Management Study - Hydraulic Flood Levels & Hot Spot Report (DRAFT B)

This report includes two major items, namely:

  • Design flood levels, discharges and floodway widths and
  • Details of potential hydraulic hot spots which may have an adverse effect upon flood levels and discharge distribution.

Over the course of many years, landowners have developed areas for farming and particularly for irrigated crops. Some of these areas are protected with banks to protect the fields from flooding. Generally, floodways have been kept open in accordance with the WRC Floodway Guidelines 1979 but in some areas, banks have encroached or blocked floodways. Floodway areas where the floodwaters cannot pass safely and in accordance with the FIoodplain Management Principles, (see Flood Study, 2002 for details), have been designated as potential hot spots. Two types of potential hot spots have been identified; hydraulic and environmental.
