Reconstructed Distribution and Extent of Native Vegetation within the Lower Macquarie-Castlereagh Region

This report describes the development of vegetation mapping datasets for the Lower Macquarie-Castlereagh RVMP Area. Two key outputs were a regional reconstructed vegetation map (commonly termed "pre-clearing" map) and a map depicting existing vegetation coverage. For the purposes of this project, reconstructed vegetation was defined as "native vegetation that is likely to have occurred on currently cleared or highly modified land, as extrapolated from existing vegetation, such that ecological processes and function are broadly reflected".

The aim of this project was to:

Model the extent and distribution of each of the vegetation communities that would occur in the Lower Macquarie-Castlereagh RVMP area had no dearing or cultivation occurred. The intent of the mapping was to "fill the gaps" in the coverage of native vegetation created by agricultural development such as clearing and cropping as a prerequisite for setting conservation targets and clearing limits for each of the extant vegetation communities within the region.

The objectives for achieving this aim were to:

  • Develop vegetation descriptions to capture the diversity of plant communities that occur across the entire region at a scale useful for conservation planning, and sufficiently broad for the vegetation type to be readily identified by the general community.
  • Provide a description of existing regional vegetation types within the Lower Macquarie-Castlereagh RVMP area, in terms of florstic composition, structure and distribution.
