Lower Butlers Gully Flood Study

The Lower Butlers Gully catchment has a total area of about 37 square kilometres (inclusive of the tributaries) at the downstream end of the study area. Upstream of William Street, the catchment is in its rural state. Below William Street, the stream runs along the eastern side of the railway as a concrete lined channel before crossing to the western side of the railway and flowing beneath the Olympic Highway, Joffre Street and Anzac Avenue. The average gradient of the stream downstream of William Street, as far as Anzac Avenue, is about 0.7 per cent.

This report presents the results of a detailed technical investigation of flooding in the Lower Butlers Gully catchment and has been sponsored by Junee Shire Council and the Department of Environment and Climate Change. The catchments rise in foothills to the south of Junee and drain the urban areas of town before discharging to Houlaghans Creek, which then drains southwards to the Murrumbidgee River. The investigation defined flooding in the Lower Butlers Gully drainage system within the urban part of town, with the hydraulic modelling extending to a point about 500 m downstream of Park Lane.

The results of the flood study are described in this report. It's three main components are:

  1. Collection and analysis of survey data and historic flood data
  2. Hydrologic component; development and testing of the RORB model
  3. Hydraulic component; preparation and testing of the HEC-RAS model
