Jewells Wetland Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan

Study Objectives

The objectives of the Jewells Wetland Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan are to:

  • Identify and assess measures for the mitigation of existing flood risk;

  • Identify and assess planning and development controls to reduce future flood risks;

  • Present a recommended floodplain management plan that outlines the best possible measures to reduce flood risk in the Jewells Wetland catchment.

Outcomes

The outcomes of the Jewells Wetland Flood Study established the basis for subsequent floodplain management activities in the catchment to address local flooding issues. The Floodplain Risk Management Study (FRMS) aims to derive an appropriate mix of management measures and strategies to effectively manage flood risk. The findings of the study will be incorporated in a Plan of recommended works and measures and program for implementation.

Study Area

The Jewells Wetland catchment encompasses an area of approximately 22km2 including parts of the suburbs of Mt Hutton, Tingira Heights, Windale, Gateshead, Bennetts Green, Redhead and Jewells. The Jewells Wetland water body is located behind the coastal dune system and is connected to the Tasman Sea (Pacific Ocean) via a number of entrance channels.
