Hinton - Audit and Crest Levee Survey November 2003

November 2003 Levee audit. The township of Hinton is located in the Lower Hunter Valley (near Maitland), approximately 30km north-northwest of Newcastle (Figure 2.1). The Maitland Levee had been constructed to protect residents from flooding. Levees and spillways were largely constructed by the individual landowners with no overall co-ordinating authority. Levees often failed during the floods. Following the disastrous flood of 1956, the NSW State Government passed the Hunter Valley Flood Mitigation Act that facilitated the coordinated construction of flood mitigation works across the whole valley. This report addresses the major issues concerning the stability of the levee at Hinton.
