Hawkesbury River - Hydraulic & Sediment Transport Processes

The Hawkesbury River Valley covers an area of approximately 22,000 square kilometres and supports a population of some 500,000. It is of major significance for water supply, agriculture, extractive industries, and many other urban and industrial purposes. A large part of the future population growth for the Sydney Region will be concentrated in this area and this will impose increasing stress on the riverine environment. This report documents the flood data collected on the Nepean/ Hawkesbury River and their tributaries during the two flood events in 1984. It is part of a major effort by the Public Works Department to prepare a data base on physical processes of the Hawkesbury River. The data base will facilitate a future major study into the estuarine and flooding regime of the Hawkesbury River downstream of the Grose River confluence.

During the periods 27th to 31st July, 1984, and 7th to 12th November, 1984, the Hawkesbury River and its tributaries experienced flooding. On both occasions, the floods were generated from several days of rainfall over the catchment. They were the first floods in the river since the major March 1978 flood, and the first occasion since that flood in which Warragamba Dam released water over its spillway. For both events, the flood waters remained largely in-bank. However, bank heights along the river are variable and pockets of low lying land that are not protected by high banks and flood gates were inundated, for example in the South Creek area (near Windsor). There was, however, no significant floodplain conveyance of flows. The flood peak of the Hawkesbury River at Windsor Bridge in July 1984 was 7.12m AHD, while the November peak was 8.0m AHD.
