Flood Studies for Eight Residual Lake Macquarie Waterway Tributary Catchments

Study Areas

Lake Macquarie City Council identified eight remaining smaller tributary catchments which have not been investigated in previous studies. These eight smaller urbanised catchments are the subject of this Flood Study, namely: * Plains Gully Creek (Swansea / Caves Beach); * Sheppards Creek (Valentine); * Muraban Creek (Floraville/Belmont); * Mills Gully Creek (Belmont); * Puntei Creek (Carey Bay); * Fullers Creek and Freshwater Creek (Bonnells Bay); * Postmistress Creek (Sunshine); * Mannering Creek, Swampy Creek and Wyee Creek (Wyee).

Flooding Mechanisims

Flooding in the eight study areas results from three mechanisms. 1. intense rainfall in the local catchment can cause local stormwater and overland flow flooding 2. heavy rainfall over the much larger Lake Macquarie catchment, causing the lake to rise and flood low-lying foreshore areas in the lower parts of the eight study areas 3. inundation from the Pacific Ocean due to a combination of high astronomic tides, storm surge in the ocean due to low barometric pressure, and wave setup and runup.
