Flood study

Central Urunga Flood Study

Central Urunga catchment comprises 45 ha, or approximately one third of Urunga, including the town centre. Parts of the catchment experience regular low level “nuisance” flooding, specifically in the rear yards of properties in Pilot Street, Lourdes Avenue and South Street, and in and around the intersection of Newry and Bonville Streets. The elevation of the railway and Morgo Street block any overflow from these areas. Subsequently, these areas were identified by Council as being at risk of substantial flood damage in large flood events. This study has been prepared to:

  • determine the capacity of the drainage elements in the catchment;
  • define the flood behaviour in the catchment;
  • determine what properties are affected by flooding;
  • determine if any flood mitigation works are viable;
  • consider how future development should be controlled to minimise flood damage;
  • examine stormwater quality issues within the catchment.
