Audit for Flood Levees for NSW - Town of Brewarrina

The town of Brewarrina situated on the Barwon River in New South Wales has a population of about 1300. It is protected from flooding by a 3km long levee system surrounding the town. The majority of the levee is of the earthfill type and the remaining 300 metres a reinforced concrete retaining wall.

The levee was constructed in 1976 to a design level of the 1974 flood of record plus 0.6 metres freeboard. Construction traffic was relied upon to achieve compaction of the earthfill levee.

The audit is designed to appraise the flood security and structural adequacy of the levee system at Brewarrina. This report presents the results of that audit and consists of a visual appraisal of the levee and materials, assessment of the water retention capacity of the levee, research of flood records and an appraisal of the cost of corrective action and the extent of such action.
