Floodplain Risk Management Plan

Floodplain Management Plan Bonville and Middle Creeks, Coffs Harbour

The Bonville Creek catchment is located to the south of Coffs Harbour on the mid north coast of New South Wales. The catchment extends approximately 16 km inland to Tuckers Nob State Forest and discharges to the ocean near the coastal township of Sawtell. Bonville Creek comprises three main tributaries; Bonville Creek itself, Pine Creek and Middle Creek, which drain approximately 40%, 55% and 5% respectively of the total 115 square kilometres catchment. The key strategies of the final plan include:

  • Appropriate structural works (detention basins) to reduce flood levels along Middle Creek;
  • Voluntary purchase of one property which is located in the high hazard floodway of Middle Creek;
  • Financial assistance to raise or floodproof properties to at least the designated flood (Le. 1% AEP level);
  • Introduce planning controls to prevent development which could impede flood flows along the main conveyance channel of Middle Creek;
  • Introduce planning controls to prevent inappropriate development on the defined flood hazard areas along Bonville and Pine Creeks;
  • Retain existing building and development controls as outlined in Council's Flood Policy; and Implement a public education programme for Middle Creek.
