The Mooki River at Caroona has a total catchment area of approximately 202,400 hectares which includes 155,600 hectares in the Warrah Creek and Borambil Creek catchments. The catchment area of concern in this study includes 56,400 hectares south of Pine Ridge and approximately 4,700 hectares to the west of the river between Pine Ridge and Caroona. In the Blackville Catchment the main tributaries of the Mooki River are Phillips Creek, Cattle Creek and Omaleah Creek which is locally referred to as Black Creek. Other significant drainage lines include Ryemere, Windy, Cranky Dick and Old Well Gullies. The objectives of the Blackville Floodplain Management Study are to:
- Provide a co-ordinated plan of management of flows in the study area.
- Identifies natural resources that may benefit from periodic flooding and consider floodplain management options that maintain or enhance their values.
- Investigate existing works on the floodplain; provide recommendations as to their suitability and effectiveness in the design flood, as well as recommend modifications where applicable.
- Identify areas (including transitional) where control works or land use practices would have unacceptable effects on flood flows including velocities, diversion and/or erosion.
- Identify the capacities and downstream effects of the existing drainage system within the study areas. Identify areas and make recommendations where cost effective improvement can be implemented.
- Investigate and recommend a range of options to control velocities/erosion in areas identified with unacceptable erosion.
