Barwon-Darling River - Walgett to Bourke - Floodplain Management - Working Paper No. 1

A review of current rural floodplain management practice in New South Wales by the Department of Land and Water Conservation (DLWC) has indicated the need for a change in approach to be more consistent with natural resource policies and community needs.

The floodplain of the Barwon-Darling River from Walgett to Bourke is one of the areas selected for investigation. Because of the large area of the floodplain between Walgett and Bourke and the limited previous investigations in the area, it is appropriate to undertake a Scoping Study to establish the key issues to be addressed in relation to flooding.

The aims of the project are:

  • To collate available data on flood behaviour, existing development, and significant natural resources of the Barwon-Darling floodplain from Walgett to Bourke
  • To describe the flood regime and to identify local issues and concerns
  • To establish priority areas within the total area for future floodplain management studies.
