Barwon-Darling River Floodplain Management - Walgett to Bourke - Final Report on Scoping Study

This scoping study has been undertaken with the following aims:

  • to collate available data on flood behaviour, existing development, and significant flood dependent ecosystems on the Barwon-Darling floodplain from Walgett to Bourke, *to describe the flood regime and to identify local issues and concerns; and
  • to establish priority areas within the study area for future floodplain management studies.

DLWC's Specialist Coastal and Flood Services Branch has carried out this study under the auspices of the Western Catchment Management Board and with guidance from a project Steering Committee comprising landholders, and Local and State government agency representatives. The study has been funded jointly through the Federal Government's Natural Heritage Trust and the NSW Government's floodplain management program. The major outcome of the study is an action plan for future floodplain management studies that is accepted by local and catchment community groups. A review of rural floodplain management practice in NSW has led to the development of strategic community - owned floodplain management plans as the means of managing the flood risk in rural catchments.
