A Flood Study of Macquarie Rivulet

This flood study of Macquarie Rivulet involves the evaluation of peak flood discharge estimates, for various average recurrence intervals. The catchment area of the Macquarie Rivulet is analysed for two subcatchments, namely Sunny bank and Princes Highway Bridge catchment. Thirty-eight years of flow records are available for Sunnybank gauging station which are used to estimate expected recorded floods for the Princes Highway Bridge catchment. In addition, design flood estimates are obtained for the two catchments using a variety of design flood estimation procedures. These methods being the rational method of Australian Rainfall and Runoff (1977 and 1987), the WBNM runoff routing model, the Cordery-Webb unit hydrograph model and regional flood frequency analysis.

It was concluded from this study that the rational method of ARR (1977) is highly inadequate for this type of catchment, although the rational method recommended in ARR (1987), was shown to be a vast improvement. The computer models used showed a considerable similarity between the two, although overall flood flow estimates were too high for the low recurrence intervals and too low for the high recurrence intervals, as was also the case with all design flood procedures adopted. The regional flood frequency method was found to be inadequate for this type of catchment. Flow estimates were very low probably due to the fact that this type of catchment was not taken into account in the formulation of this regional flood frequency method for New South Wales.
