Merimbula Lake and Back Lake Flood Study

The study is focused on Merimbula Lake and Back Lake within the Bega Valley Shire LGA. The lakes are located adjacent to one another, with the township of Merimbula situated between the two lakes. The catchment area is 75 square kilometres, and contains a number of suburbs, namely, Merimbula, Berrambool, Mirador, Millingandi, and Bald Hills. Both lakes have dynamic entrances with sediment depositing and scouring out of both entrances, depending on catchment flow and ocean wave and water level conditions.

The primary objective of the Flood Study is to define the flood behaviour under historical and existing conditions in the catchments, while addressing possible future variations in flood behaviour that might be caused by climate change and then provide information for management of the catchment. This report details the work undertaken as part of Stage 2 of the Flood Study, namely:

  • Establishment of the hydrological and hydrodynamic models;
  • Sensitivity testing of model parameters; and
  • Calibration and validation of the hydrological and hydrodynamic models.

This Stage 2 Report forms the basis for the definition of design flood events as part of the next stage of the study.
